With Popolo's gone, this small new restaurant fills the steak niche in the Preston Royal Shopping Center. At Al's, which serves the same cuts of meat as pricier steak joints in town, an 8-ounce filet goes for about $30 with a trip to the salad bar. This is no average salad bar, either. There's a small selection of composed salads, such as orzo with olives, capers, and celery and a Greek version with tomato, chunks of feta, and lemon vinaigrette. Besides the steaks, there's the pan-seared halibut covered with a champagne sauce, and crab served with a side of potato ravioli. Try the Grand Marnier soufflle, too. Though the wine list is ho-hum, you can't beat this tasty meal for two for under $80.
