In June 1998, Texas Orthopaedic Associates expanded its realm of expertise with the addition of Dr. Timothy G. Schacherer, who specializes in injuries and reconstruction of the hand and upper extremity and microvascular surgery. Born in Chicago and raised in Iowa, Dr. Schacherer joined the Navy after graduating from high school. Finding life as an enlisted seaman not sufficiently fulfilling, he soon found his way into college via the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1975. His medical degree was obtained from the Medical College of Virginia in 1979, where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Society.

Dr. Schacherer completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in Virginia, and completed a fellowship in Hand Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who has served as Medical Officer on the USS California as well as the Director of Hand and Upper Extremity Services at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, where he ultimately served as Chairman of the Department. Upon military retirement, he became the Director of Upper Extremity Services at UT Southwestern Medical School in 1994. In addition, Dr. Schacherer served as an Assistant Professor in the Orthopaedic Department at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1991 to 1995;  President of the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons from 1991 to 1992; and as an Assistant Professor of Microvascular Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. Schacherer is married and has two daughters and one son. His hobbies include scuba diving and flying as a private pilot.
