Texas real estate mogul Trammell Crow and his wife, Margaret, became infatuated with Asian art thanks to their many travels overseas. Starting in the 1960s, the Crows cultivated an enormous assortment of pieces spanning more than 5,000 years. As the 21st century neared, the pair decided to establish an institution that would house a permanent collection of their most notable art, and the base of the Trammell Crow Center was redesigned to accommodate The Crow Collection of Asian Art in 1998.
Fronted by a serene black fountain with a sculpture of a Taoist deity in the center, the Crow Collection has incredibly unique designs to its galleries that cater specifically to the origins of the art housed in each room. Gallery I features a Japanese tea garden to go with its collection of crystal spheres and screen paintings, while Gallery II has a mezzanine and the Jade Room, where you’ll find one of the largest U.S. collections of green jade stones housed inside glass cases. The museum’s largest space, Gallery III, bears resemblance to an Indian garden court and features works from India and Southeast Asia.
The museum often hosts multiple special exhibitions at the same time, with past exhibits bringing such items as snuff bottles and ceramics, colorful Himalayan art, and the fashion of Yeohlee Teng to the Crow Collection. The Lotus Shop carries a number of Asian-inspired products, and the museum holds workshops and family-friendly events celebrating Asian music, culture, and food.
