Profile
Opened in 1936, Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park comprise 7.5 acres of flowers, plants, ponds, and wildlife. Certified by the Texas Organic Research Center as 100 percent organic and kept up by totally sustainable methods, this botanical oasis is the ultimate haven for the eco-conscious.
Among the attractions are the Benny J. Simpson Texas Native Plant Collection, where you’ll find 345 plants from 84 genera, an herb garden that requires all of your senses for the full experience, and a serene water garden at Leftwich Pond with an assortment of aquatic plants and creatures. A ticket into the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium adds a few dollars to the price of admission, but it’s worth the extra expense. This two-story exhibit has between 500 and 1,000 butterflies inside at any given time, including numerous species native to Texas.
Texas Discovery Gardens also has a series of recurring activities, including Organic University, a two-hour tutorial that educates visitors on topics such as flora and fauna and composting, butterfly gardening classes, and a once-a-month Garden Walk with a veteran horticulturist.
