Profile

Samuel Lynne Galleries, opened in September 2008 by Dallas restaurateur Phil Romano and artist J.D. Miller, is still a young gallery. But it’s not just the gallery that’s new. All of the art at Samuel Lynne comes from 21st-century artists, with an emphasis on effect rather than painstaking detail. Because the business is young, Samuel Lynne doesn’t work with an extensive list of artists, but its owners contribute plenty of their own work.

Miller’s work presents conventional artistic subjects—flowers, lilies, waterfalls—in an unconventional way. Using a process he calls “oil sculpting,” Miller makes three-dimensional paintings by creating traditional oil artwork, then sculpting sections of the piece with a palette knife. Romano, always a hobbyist when it came to painting, found meaning in his art after meeting Miller. His colorful, abstract works are inspired by Reflectionism, a theory that says the energy you give out is what the universe reflects back.

The gallery sometimes hosts special exhibits, during which the public can meet the artists. The gallery has four full art galleries, a 30-seat HD theater, and a wine and espresso bar.
