Taking it to the Streets is a week-long workshop bringing 20 young artists, age 13-16 to Dallas Contemporary.
This program engages students in a creative experience exploring all aspects of a working artists’ process, from inspiration and research to construction, design, and exhibition. A master artist, local artists, and teaching assistant will lead daily sessions.
The program will consist of three phases. The first phase will be an introduction to a professional graffiti artist/ master teacher. Phase two will engage students in an exploration of basic graffiti techniques such as silkscreen, stencil, and collage. The master teacher will facilitate daily sessions providing one-on-one critiques of works in progress and overall group critiques.
In addition, exhibiting artists will host a session during the workshop. Throughout the workshop, students will be challenged to manipulate the arts media and utilize visual thinking strategies. They will find content and inspiration from their own lives, their community and DC’s neighborhood. The last phase of the program will challenge the students to create individual and collaborative works.
