Keri Shafer, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Cardiology. She serves as the Medical Director of Adult Congenital Heart Disease program and specializes in managing adult congenital heart disease, focusing on exercise and sports participation; echocardiography; aortopathies including Marfan syndrome; and pregnancy in the setting of congenital heart disease.

She earned her medical degree at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and completed internal medicine residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She completed her adult cardiovascular fellowship at UT Southwestern. She also completed a research fellowship in exercise physiology at UT Southwestern’s Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine. She acquired additional fellowship training in adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease, Dr. Shafer joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.

Dr. Shafer’s research focuses on physiology in adult congenital heart disease, specifically exercise and sports participation. She has completed research in medical education, and her contributions have been published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she routinely presents at the American College of Cardiology and other national meetings on adult congenital heart disease and medical education.

She is a member of the Adult Congenital Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association.
