F. Alan Barber, M.D., FACS Orthopedic Surgeon, is a native of Oklahoma where he excelled in sports and academics in high school,was a member of the state championship swim team, was selected to attend Boys State and spent his senior year in Madrid, Spain. He was then awarded a four-year Army ROTC scholarship and attended Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with honors.
Dr. Barber received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and completed orthopedic surgery training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He continued to serve as an officer of the U.S. Army and was Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at military hospital’s in both Germany and at Ft. Knox, Kentucky as well as the Chief of Foot Surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He left the Army with the rank of Lt. Colonel after having received the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award.
After leaving service for civilian life, Dr. Barber pursed advanced specialty training as a fellow in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery at Medical Arts Hospital in Dallas, TX. He has since received numerous awards, has published numerous articles on knee, shoulder and sports medicine injuries and has written several book chapters on surgical techniques. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of several professional journals and was named reviewer of the year by the Arthroscopy Journal for which he subsequently served as an associate editor.
Dr. Barber is a frequent lecturer to physician colleagues around the world having served as an Instructional Course Lecturer for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a Master Instructor at the Orthopedic Learning Center for the Arthroscopy Association of North America and regularly lectures at the San Diego Shoulder Arthroscopy course. He has research and/or consultation contracts with several different medical device companies and he is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.
Dr. Barber and his wife, Sherry, have three children and four grandchildren.
