Themistocles Dassopoulos, MD earned his medical degree at Brown University before completing a residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Dr. Dassopoulos was fellowship trained in Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Dassopoulos is the Medical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. Prior to joining Baylor Center for IBD, Dr. Dassopoulos served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Section of Inflammatory Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Dassopoulos is a nationally recognized expert in the IBDs: Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, microscopic colitis and pouchitis. The mission of the Baylor Center for IBD is to provide advanced, patient-centered care to patients with these lifelong and sometimes debilitating diseases. Disease management entails a treatment plan for inducing and maintaining remission, a focus on patient function and quality of life, monitoring and prevention of disease and treatment complications, support for the patient in his/her role as self-manager and care coordinated with the patient’s primary provider and other specialists.

Dr. Dassopoulos has authored 40 original articles, 30 reviews, symposia lectures and editorials, 7 book chapters, and numerous abstracts. He has served the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) as head or member of several committees, and was the first author of the recent AGA Technical Review on immunomodulator and anti-TNF therapy in Crohn’s disease. He has lectured extensively and serves as an editor for the journals of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (published by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America) and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (published by the AGA). His areas of research include cost-effectiveness analysis in IBD, quality of care and guideline development in IBD and digital analysis of endoscopic images. Dr. Dassopoulos has been recognized in Best Doctors in America since 2011 and has received the Gold Doc recognition by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
