James W. Brodsky, MD, is a native of Houston, Texas, where he graduated with highest honors from Bellaire High School. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where he studied both pre-medical sciences, as well as receiving an honors degree in History & Literature. After his medical training, Dr. Brodsky and his wife, who is also a physician and a native Texan, returned to Texas with their family to practice, both here at BUMC.

SERVICE

Dr. Brodsky served nine years on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, including as President. He served on numerous committees of the hospital, the AOFAS, the Texas Orthopedic Association, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and for a decade on the Written Exam Task Force of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He volunteered for over 20 years at the Dallas VA Hospital, in patient care, resident teaching, and as Chief of the Section of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

AWARDS & HONORS

He was elected to the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association in 2002. He is the recipient of over two dozen grants for research and education. Dr. Brodsky received the Teaching Excellence award from the orthopaedic residents of UT Southwestern six times. He has received the IFFAS prize for Best Basic Science study in 2008, and was a co-author of a study on STAR Total Ankle Replacement that received the 2009 AOFAS Mann Award for Best Clinical study. He has done visiting professorships & lectureships across the USA, as well as in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. He is an honorary member of Othopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies of Australia, Brazil, Spain and Britain.

ACADEMICS

In addition to a busy clinical practice, Dr. Brodsky has been a life-long teacher and professor for medical students and orthopaedic residents, as well as for post-residency fellows from across the US, and around the world. He is the author of over sixty articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, and thirty chapters in medical textbooks, including the major texts in the field of foot and ankle surgery. He continues an active program of clinical research, and basic science research, the latter primarily in the study of human motion. He is Medical Director of the Human Motion and Performance Lab here at BUMC.
