The Writer’s Garret aims to establish and expand a community of readers and writers in North Texas and to get younger generations to embrace literature as an art form. And the group does it by bringing an impressive array of events to the public and connecting audience members to some of the most influential writers from around the country. The Writer’s Garret organizes a number of special writing courses and workshops, ranging from creative writing and playwriting to literary blogging, taught by professional writers. Each course starts with the basics before delving deeper into the art of storytelling. But the Writer’s Garret also organizes plenty of free events, too. Author readings occur often, and the recurring Writer’s Studio, an author interview session which follows the format of Inside the Actor’s Studio, gives audience members insight into the lives of writers such as Alice Walker, Umberto Eco, and Joan Didion.
