Cindy Kumer, a veteran dancer and TCU alum from Missouri, founded Votum Dance Company in 2008. Kumer’s roots lie in ballet and modern dance, styles that are both blended with an array of musical genres to create ethereal shows. But Kumer’s not just an idle owner – she’s often onstage, performing beside her stable of professional dancers. At Votum, classical ballet is executed with precision, while the styles of legendary choreographers Lester Horton, Martha Graham, and Jose Limon heavily influence the modern aspect of the company’s program.
Performances such as 2009’s Nativity Ballet or Armies of Heaven are often filled with spiritual themes, and the name Votum comes from a Latin word meaning “prayer, wish, desire, vow, promise to God.” Dances are accompanied by live music or spoken word, and improvised pieces are incorporated as well.
