In 1984, a group of artists turned a warehouse basement located under Main Street into a theater; hence the name Undermain. Although the story behind this venue’s moniker might be forgettable, the same can’t be said for the distinctive brand of performing art presented inside it. For more than a quarter century, Undermain Theatre has offered an annual schedule of new and experimental works to a loyal following. Undermain’s season features two or three productions that typically make four-week runs, with plays from the minds of Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard, Mac Wellman, and many more. The company also publishes original works, stages a number of world premieres, and has performed shows in locales outside of Dallas—from New York to Macedonia. Hours vary by performance.
