Orchestra of New Spain

While in search of music for a concert series at the Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe downtown, Grover Wilkins stumbled across a century of Spanish compositions that had long been ignored. His discovery led to much more than one series; it spawned the Orchestra of New Spain, a group that focuses on the unpublished works of the 18th-century Spanish Baroque period available only through libraries of the Royal Court and cathedrals in Spain. While the orchestra has expanded its catalogue to include works from the 17th and 19th centuries, it remains strongly committed to the music of the1700s, going so far as to play on period instruments. The orchestra runs a schedule of monthly concerts from October to June, playing in various venues from churches and homes to the Meadows Museum on the SMU campus.
