Level Ground Arts is a new theater company—its first official season was 2009—that likes to take theater a bit off the beaten path. The company’s founder, Billy Fountain, surrounds himself with three dozen talented performers who bring LGA’s creative catalogue to life. Of the seven different plays the group staged in its inaugural season, five were world premieres, including a musical rendition of the cult film Evil Dead. Other oddly lovable works have included Cannibal! The Musical and Plan 9 From Outer Space. But even when the company tackles the classics, it add its own unique spin. The group spiced up a version of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest with low-tech effects and improvised jazz accompaniment.
