The Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra is a nonprofit group dedicated to keeping big band music, wildly popular in the 1930s and ’40s, alive and well in the 21st century. Led by drummer Adonis Rose, the FWJO presents a mix of instrumental and vocal music, including jazz ensemble classics from legends such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington, as well as original pieces. The band has also spawned the Krewe of Swing, a group composed of the leading members of the FWJO, which plays jazz intended for smaller ensembles. The FWJO also maintains an aggressive series of outreach programs to educate young generations about jazz. Aside from incorporating jazz history into the arts curriculum in schools, the orchestra also offers master classes, internships, and performances designed to propagate the genre by fostering an early interest in it.
