Review: Cafe San Miguel
By Jennifer Chininis (9/19/2007)
Henderson Avenue is undergoing a revitalization. It started near Central Expressway and is slowly trickling east toward Cafe San Miguel, a colorful respite perched on the still-shady stretch of this up-and-coming part of Dallas.
In this Tex-Mex crazed town, we’re used to combo plates, fajitas, and margaritas. But Cafe San Miguel aims at a more authentic Mexican experience, starting with its modern interpretation of the 19th-century hacienda. A brilliant color scheme and kitschy yet cool décor, like oversize tarot cards, set the vibe. So order the signature pomerita (pomegranate margarita, frozen or on the rocks) or the refreshingly fizzy El Don Ron (much like a minty, rum-infused mojito) and prepare your taste buds for the ride.
Start with the guacamole, super thick and made fresh with lime, cilantro, and garlic, best enjoyed slathered on tiny, out-of-this-world homemade corn tortillas. Those same tortillas come wrapped around such flavorful ingredients as Negra Modelo-battered red snapper, fried light and crispy, and jazzed up with crunchy cabbage and crèma de limon. Beyond tacos and enchiladas are impressive dishes such as cordoniz en pipian, succulent little quail in pumpkin-seed mole, and arrachera San Miguel, tender strips of Angus steak served alongside a delicately fried cheese-filled chile relleno—surely one of the best in town.
