A recent dinner in this cozy dining room, flickering with candlelight, made us wish we lived in the State-Thomas neighborhood. Interestingly, though, the other patrons that night hardly looked like Uptown denizens, so we surmised that owner Angela Gordon, who graciously patrols the room asking for assurances that diners’ expectations have been met, must have quite a following.We can see why. Every bite was memorable, from the spinach artichoke dip fully loaded with garlic and freshly grated Parmesan to the mound of warm, moist chocolate-cinnamon cake. In between there was buttery, sherry-rich lobster bisque and a simple, fresh salad of smoked mozzarella, asparagus, and sliced hearts of palm drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette, followed by homemade lobster ravioli with truffled cream sauce, chunks of hearty mushrooms, and more crisp asparagus. Our only quibble: we could hardly taste the lobster beneath such a heavy sauce, but dang if that sauce wasn’t right-on good. Entrée No. 2, a ruby red trout special, was much lighter. The sauce filled with artichokes and kalamata olives had only the slightest hint of cream. Roasted vegetables, including bright green beans, yellow pattypan squash, grape tomato, and baby carrot, were a delicious departure from ho-hum veggie sides. A bed of fluffy couscous rounded out the plate.Also worth noting: the restaurant offers a list of wine specials, usually bottles that they need to move to make room for new inventory, like a Rodney Strong Alexander’s Crown Cabernet Sauvignon—an excellent choice, all the way through to the chocolate cake.
