Profile

Lone Star Park is a 315-acre horse racing facility in Grand Prairie. Opened in 1998, the park has two tracks—a 1-mile dirt track with a seven-furlough turf track inside of it. Beginning in April, the park opens up for Spring Thoroughbred Season. It also hosts races like the annual Lone Star Million Day—a series of six stakes races with a total purse of more than $1 million—and it was the site of the 2004 Breeder’s Cup. Fireworks, live music, and other special events take place almost every weekend during the summer.

The air-conditioned grandstand is enclosed in glass, with room for nearly 8,000 racing fans, although there is additional seating throughout the park. More than 30 barns on the grounds can accommodate 1,600 horses, and there are separate seasons for thoroughbreds and quick-sprinting American Quarter Horses. Thoroughbred season goes from April to July with races Thursday through Sunday, while quarter horses run from the end of September through November on most Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Wagering is allowed at Lone Star Park, and a simulcasting pavilion allows you to bet on races from around the country as they are taking place. Inexperienced bettors can brush up on their skills through “Lone Star University” on the park’s website, which teaches the basics of handicapping variables, wagering philosophies, payoffs, and more, as well as providing a glossary of racing terms that’ll have you betting like a pro.

Lone Star Park offers plenty of dining choices, from hamburgers and hot dogs to the fourth-floor Silks Dining Room, where you can reserve a table and enjoy a sumptuous buffet. There are also several bars around the park for those craving an adult beverage.
