Dallas Summer Musicals

Profile

Dallas Summer Musicals staged its first show, Sigmund Romberg’s Blossom Time, in 1941 in the Fair Park Band Shell. DSM kept its annual summer series outdoors until 1954, when Fair Park’s Music Hall installed air conditioning and the musicals could finally move inside.

Early incarnations of the summer series offered 10 plays that ran for a week apiece. But the schedule is much different today, as DSM now has two separate series: Stage Right and Stage Left. Stage Right is the current version of the summer series, producing musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera and The Wizard of Oz. But Stage Right is no longer a strictly summer series—it stretches from February to October—and the eight or so programs that hit the stage each season enjoy longer runs of at least two to three weeks. Stage Left is DSM’s short winter program at the Majestic Theatre. Usually offering four to five musicals per season, Stage Left runs from the beginning of December through the end of January. DSM typically performs from Tuesday through Sunday each week while shows are running, including matinee and evening performances on weekends.
